67 Days and Counting
If I've got it right, Christmas is exactly 60 days away. And would you believe, some people have already put up their Christmas tree, like the T& T Red Cross for example. It's a beautifully decorated tree. Sometimes, I think that we are running down the Christmas but with most Trinbagonians seemingly have more of a Carnival mindset, I guess we have to start thinking of and planning for Christmas earlier and earlier.
Well I eh even start to think about Divali much less Christmas! Ah just finish about 2 Divali cards and must get those off to the post office if they are to arrive before November 5. So ah feel ah had better take in front and say Shubh Divali to all my friends of the Hindu faith because the card will arrive late. LOL!
All this thinking of holidays of course brought me to that resolutions thing we do each and every January 1. Have you thought about those resolutions you made at the start of the year? Making resolutions is a practise in which I never indulged but lots of us do and if you did, take a look or have a think about them again to determine which ones you started, completed and are yet to complete. If they all look unattainable at this stage, then perhaps you may be interested in creating new resolutions that can be completed in the 67 days that will bring us to the year end.
For instance we can really practice that age old resolution of seeing each new day as just that, a fresh new 24 hours in which we will strive to forget all failures and create new opportunities. So Madame Homemaker, you did not clean the kitchen cupboards yesterday. Don't beat up on yourself, just take on that task in the new day. No job came my way yesterday, but I am optimistic that someone will return my phone calls, letters, emails and tell me that I am the woman for the job!
Another resolution may be to volunteer some of your time to a cause which you believe is worthy. I've got time on my hands, so I think I'll look into this one. Yes, the little devil on my left shoulder says " aren't you tired of volunteer work? You've been doing this since you were a kid?" But the angel on the right shoulder whispers " but you enjoy giving and meeting new people." The angel wins. I shall have that part of me rise and be of use to someone other than myself. I know the rewards will also fall upon me, because my psyche will be all the better for it.
How about resolving not to overspend during the coming holiday season? The Divali sales are being broadcast, deyas and Christmas lights have begun to twinkle in the fastly-darkening evenings but that does not mean we have to go over-board jumping into the deep waters where we will tread until the end of March 2011. I checked my closets and gift box ( I buy items through-out the year which can be given as gifts and keep them in this special box) and found packages which have never been opened or given as gifts to the intended, for whom they were bought! The gift-box is a little sparse this year but nevertheless, I think I need to give some of these gifts away.
Resolve to speak pleasantly to your spouse, significant other, friend. Think on purpose, then talk with purpose. These are tough times and often the stress is only revealed when we talk to the ones who give us unconditional love. We may not mean to be harsh but often we are. I don't have to go into it any deeper. Guys, you know the things you say to put her down and ladies, try you best... think kindly of him. Even if you're finding it hard to verbalize those thoughts, your body language will tell him that the love is all there. Parents, the children aren't easy but you made them, so speak to them thoughtfully, train and support them with your heart, your time and your money. Keep in mind that whether or not we have created children, they do watch the actions and reactions of all and learn from these actions and reactions - 'monkey see, monkey do'. I would want to bet that if we practised this resolution, of speaking in a loving manner (read respectful, kind, appreciative) to all, we would see an appreciable difference in our individual communities. For me, this isn't always easy particularly when I'm driving! One more bad drive and I'll... I'll ...try harder. Yes, ah smilin' even if it looking like a skin teet'.
Perhaps the only resolution that I will complete in 67 days is that resolve to thank Spirit, each and every day for life, the loves in my life, continued happiness and His guidance through this, what I call my life.
