Happy New Year!

And my new year starts off well!

I thank the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) for assisting me in this new morn.  Our Police Service gets knocked a lot and well they do deserve such knocks.  For instance as I headed to 'friend after friend' as the first morning of 2015 began, I did not see one car of the Highway Patrol.  O' I saw lots of people having difficulty figuring out where the lanes of the road were.  I saw a few who found driving in the arc that surrounds our Grand Savannah, veeery difficult.  I saw people suddenly stopping on the roadway; there was no obstruction, they just stopped in the middle of the road.  Yet I saw no police cars, no police roadblocks, no Highway Patrol.  Albeit, I am grateful to have them about since I would not be the person to head out at night to look for any thug.  Tonight though I also saw the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service at work  - protecting and serving and I do hope with pride - as its motto states.

So as I was saying as I'm headed to 'friend after friend' and found few, I saw her on the road near Columbus Drive, Westmoorings.  It is about 12:35 a.m., she is dressed in a coral/sand-coloured suit and her handbag swings as walks.  This little old lady her back so rounded by osteoporosis that her head is pointed towards the ground.  I passed her and stopped a little way ahead because I wanted to make sure that it was indeed an old lady and not someone ready to pounce on me.  There she was with hair neatly cane-rowed and as she came to and passed the car, now standing in the western exit lane, I let down the window and enquired if she needed help.  She indicated that she was fine, just taking  a walk and then she would head home.  I further enquired as to exactly where was home.  She indicated that she lived in Port of Spain.  I asked what part of Port of Spain and she indicated Barataria.  Barataria is at least 3 kms east of Port of Spain.  She had a gentle voice and so her response to my question on whether or not someone at home would be missing her, waiting to celebrate the new year with her touched my heart.  She responded "no, I live alone".  This soft, matter of fact response made my heart bleed.

I decided that I just could not drive off and as she walked on, I called the Police Emergency and lodged my concern, asking for help for this lady.  As I drove off to my home the lady did not leave my mind and after a couple of blocks, I turned the car around and observed her from across the hghway as she walked steadily and rather briskly, west along the Western Main Road.   I also decided that if the Police did not turn up, I would follow Ms. J, (yes, I asked and she told me her full name) and make sure she stayed safe until the light of day came and I figured out what to do.  The Police were yet to arrive and I was getting ansty so I telephoned Inspector Reid of the Community Police whom I had met recently under different circumstances.  He did not answer.  I switched gears and headed to the Four Roads Police Station  but as I waited my turn to make a report I over-heard an officer indicating to his superior that he was off to investigate a report of an old lady on the Western Main Road.  I duly thanked the officer for heading to take care of her and I left the station.

Still, I could not leave this lady alone so I headed to the area where I left her.  She was not there and I made a patrol around Westmoorings South and west along the Western Main Road as far as the Glencoe mini-mall, because I could not find her.  By this time I am upset with myself for not having the courage to invite her into the car and taking her to a place of safety.  Suddenly I saw her, on the northern side of the Western Main Road, headed east!  I got off the highway and stopped in a space where I am not an obstruction to traffic and yet I am sure to see her.  I then saw the squad car and for the first time in my life those blue flashing lights are so welcoming!  (My phone rang and it was Inspector Reid who was very pleasant as I apologized for disturbing his off-time: his family time.  He seemed only pleased that my problem had been solved by the Police).  I watched from a distance and truly cannot see the activity that is occurring but as they drove off, I got a wave from the officer and I saw that coral/sand-coloured outfit in the back seat.

Jubilation!  It's around 2:05 a.m., and I now feel comfortable enough to head home.  Thank you, Officers of the TTPS - the Emergency number personnel, the officers assigned to the Four Roads Police Station and Inspector Reid.  I pray that my God keeps you safe and dedicated to your work.  I pray that Ms. J has people who care and that she really is not alone.   As you know, I believe that God is love and love in action are the times we get to see God in each other thus I pray that I shall have other opportunities in 2015 to see love in action in my dear beloved land of Trinidad and Tobago.

Happy New Year!
